The Sensory Garden

Canadian Embassy, Haiti

In 2016, following a public tender, Ginkgo Landscape was selected to create the new gardens at the Canadian Embassy in Port-au-Prince. We designed twelve gardens that pay tribute to the longstanding relationship between Haiti and Canada: the Red River Garden, the White River Garden, the Sensory Garden, the Citrus Garden, the Xerophytic Garden, the Haitian Garden, the Tropical Garden, the Orchid Garden, the Secret Garden, the Orchard, and two gardens dedicated to the Canadian flag.

The colours, shapes, and plant selection reflect the collaboration and interaction between the two countries: the Canadian flag rises above three tropical palm trees sheltering the typical red hibiscus of Haiti, resting atop a maple leaf (symbol of Canada) cut into the lawn and covered with reddish pine bark (also evocative of Canada). Nothing is left to chance in this labyrinth of corridors, planters, and hidden corners, covered in lush vegetation: a carefully conceived homage to the senses.
