Tapis Rouge
Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the American Red Cross, through its LAMIKA project, funded Tapis Rouge, a multifunctional public space in Carrefour-Feuilles. It fosters community cohesion, social gatherings, and artistic expression through murals by local artists. A newly dug well ensures long-term garden maintenance and provides a water source for the community.
Our task was to select plant combinations providing shade for an outdoor amphitheatre while harmonising colour and texture across terraces, in line with EVA Studio’s innovative design. Over time, the sun-exposed concentric rings of the plaza will be complemented by shaded areas as acacias and flamboyants mature. Four terraces of varying green hues convey freshness, while drought- and heat-resistant species are mulched with pine bark to reduce evaporation, exemplifying Nature-based Solutions (NbS).
Through community consultation, EVA Studio implemented long-term sustainable solutions, fostering dialogue between local residents and planners to mitigate the consequences of prior devastation. The public space now incorporates a community gym, play and leisure areas, solar panels, a well, and a water tank, cultivating a sense of belonging, identity, and civic pride.
